Things that scare the heck out of me

September 20, 2009

My kids are asking when it will be time to pull the Halloween decorations out of the attic and onto the house. It’s a strange request given the fact that aside from a few cobwebs and maybe a mouse or two, there are no Halloween decorations up there to bring down.

But maybe there should be.
With all the excitement I bring to holidays like Christmas and July 4, I’ve been a little lax in the Halloween department. It’s a day that sometimes seems to clash with my faith. There’s a growing push by Christian leaders to boycott October 31 and treat it as just another day. Witches and ghosts and goblins aren’t good for the soul, they say.
Maybe that’s true. But I for one have never minded Halloween, if for no other reason than it makes us a little more comfortable talking about something we rarely do–what scares us.

If you’d like to know what scares me, what truly shakes me to the core, then hop on over to Katdish’s blog. I’ve bared my soul. You’ll find interesting things, scary things, and things that may even alter your opinion of me. And that’s okay with me. After all, we’re all afraid of something. It’s what we do with that fear that makes the difference.

OK, so I am with you on 3 outta 5 of those fears…(posted at Katdish's too)

I had to share that when I was young……my friend's parents would take us to the movie theater where we were supposed to see a G rated movie while they went to their R rated horror flick at the same time. Thinking back now…..we were barely 7 or 8, yikes! Just send us all alone in a theater…..OK, anyway…being the obedient child that I was……we always would sneak out and go into the horror movies as soon as the lights dimmed. Yeah…..MAGIC with Anthony Hopkins was the one that did me in.

I have a horrible memory for the most part, but I will never forget that poem.

    Abracadabra,
    I sit on his knee.
    Presto, changeo,
    And now he‘s me!

    ****SHUDDER****

One thing God has done for me is giving me my daughter who is NOT a doll girlie girl…..Thank you!

This was a great fun post (in a warped like getting spooked kinda way)

Always neat to get to know more about you Billy!

I'm not one for any scary movie and personally I'm not into Halloween either. Our children don't trick or treat – but they stand at the door to great our neighbors with a smile and sometimes a little song depending on which one answers first!

This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Into the darkness light will prevail!

    Love and blessings,
    Jill

It's my birthday, so Halloween isn't so bad on my list. :D

I also think people get out and talk to neighbors more on this day than they do the rest of the year. Hmmm.

Katdish just put clowns and televangelist wives in the same 'club'. (snort)

    Billy,

I sometimes wonder if you were my brother that I never knew. How sad it is that we share so many of the same fears except for clowns. I guess perhaps we watched way to many scary movies growing up in our teenage year.

For the life of me I can't stand cemetaries because of the whole zombie thing, even though I know once people are dead they stay in the ground. However, I still get chills driving by them and can't stand the older ones with the overly large tombstones either.

Thank you for sharing these, because now I know that someone somewhere shares these same fears and I know I am not alone.

    Love and Hugs ~ Kat

Love Halloween…but like you I don't make a big deal out of it. No decorations. Maybe I should too…

What scares me…when my 3 year old tries to take a nap at 7 pm. I get really nerves and I know I am in for a long night.

Love your blog!!! I forget how I found you but I love it!

EEEKKK! Sounds like you watched too many of the wrong things! LOL
Second, you need to read 'Fearless' by Max Lucado.

I will admit that spiders, wood ticks, and tornadoes scare me. And I've already read 'Fearless.'

The amount Americans spend on Halloween decorations would feed many mouths….

After Christmas, we spend the most amount of money on this holiday.

I wonder if Christians would voluntarily give up their expenditures for this day and instead find an overseas mission organization to give money to. Involve the kids.

I love Halloween. I love that children can dress up and have fun : ). And I love Jesus too. I don't think He would be mad that I allow my son to participate : )
