“until you learn to be comfortable in misery, you will not succeed. Ever.”
I think that's true, not just in war, in writing, but in everything. Discomfort forwards our life story, prods us (the protagonist) on. Without it, we'd stagnate.
Great post.

I really understand the message of needing to go through the training and the trenches to really write something meaningful, painful, yet passionate. Thanks.

There is indeed something about Army Rangers. They're tough and focused. Chuck Holton was a Ranger and is also a writer. He certainly would understand your friend's writing philosophy.

I think surrender is not acceptable for a Christian in whatever the Lord has called him/her to do.

That's encouragement! Thanks! Have a good weekend Billy, whether it will be one of war or words flowing freely, I am sure you'll get it done. Regardless.

Alright! Well said! That IS what it takes. No permission to get sloppy about my commitment and discipline. Thank you.

This post is intriguing, and I like the idea of the Ranger immersing himself in writing a book, then having a blitz of submitting proposals and probably becoming a published author to great reviews.

Have you read "The Art of War for Writers" by James Scott Bell yet? It's new. It's red. And it's awesome. Just finished it this week and it's much like what you write here . . . only with shrapnel and strategy. LOL.

"Kirk wasn’t ready to be a writer in high school. You have to grow some and learn some and fail some and hurt a lot first."

". . . embrace the thirst and the hunger . . . endure the cold and the heat."

"But until you learn to be comfortable in misery, you will not succeed. Ever."

"The writing life is . . . roaming through the desert of one submission after another, searching for whatever scrap of food or drip of water you can beg, borrow and steal in order to stay alive. It’s enduring the cold of having nothing to say and the heat of knowing you must write anyway."

"And above all, writing is war."

This is good stuff! Good stuff indeed.
