Staples and the human condition

Today’s the day we’ve all been dreading. My family, I mean. It’s a day that has been in the back of our minds for the last three months, stuck there like a burr that we couldn’t seem to get out. The fact that we didn’t really have to worry about it made it hurt a little less. It was a day we knew would come, yes. But it was also a day that would come later.

Today is later. The last day of summer vacation.

My wife is back to school already, busy with setting up desks and planning and copying and whatever else teachers do. My children seem to be going through the five stages of grief (my daughter has made it to the last stage, acceptance. My son is still stuck on denial).

The first week of school is always tough on everyone. Add to that a few pages of revisions from the publisher to go through, and that means it’s time to hunker down and wait out the brewing storm.

As such, I’ll be doing a little re-posting this week of things you might’ve missed the first time around. The first on is over at katdish’s site. And appropriately enough, it’s about back-to-school shopping. Hop on over there. Say hey. And remember, it’s not just the school kids who can start all over again.

My son is also in the denial phase (2nd year of college) — he says he cannot figure out how to keep up his hours at work and hours at school. I said to him, “Welcome to grown-up town!” :/ Poor kid…I feel for him because he really does his best at everything he does.

    Best to you and yours!

My kids are gone, so the “back to school days” are relegated to Target sales and school zone speed traps . But to be honest, I miss those days. I do.

While my kids are long gone away from home, I am reminded of back to school by Target ads and school-zone speed traps. I do miss the hype, the hope and the tears of back to school days.

I always had the best intentions of remaining organized. I would get my binders and dividers, but the chaos would ensue after about a month. Thanks for the reminder, though–I can always try again!

You just described my whole life. Well, 18 years of it, anyway – grades K-12 and 5 years of college. Except that in college you get twice as many chances to start over – each semester is another time to try, succeed for a few weeks, then get back into your rut. I never yet conquered myself. (As evidenced by the mess around me that I intend to spend the day cleaning up.) But praise God, He is above the world, and He is my conqueror! Now, if I can just get myself out of the way and let Him live through me as He intends . . . .
