Resolution guy

Though the first of January was a couple days ago, I’ve yet to make my resolution. I’ve even yet to decide if I’m going to make one at all. It’s something I toss around in my mind every year–whether to do or not to do–but in the end, it’s always the same. I don’t change.

At least, I don’t change in ways that allow me to see I’ve changed. It’s a slow process, slow and slight, sort of like time itself. Watch a clock, and the minutes never seem to pass. Don’t watch it, and you’re amazed how quickly a day can pass.

Whether I make a resolution or not this year, they have always fascinated me. We make them because we want to prove we can be better, and most times we break them and prove instead that we’ll never be quite perfect.

I’m writing about my own experience with resolutions over at katdish’s site today. Feel free to hop on over there and include your own.

And Happy New Year!

Make a joyful noise

People seem to sing a lot this time of year. I’ve noticed that over the past few weeks. I’ve seen people singing on street corners and in their vehicles and while waiting in line. And it isn’t for the benefit of others, either. None of them had or sought an audience. They were just singing to…sing.

My son likes to sing in the shower. My daughter prefers the kitchen table. Me, I reserve my somewhat questionable tenor for the privacy of the drive home from work, when the bad things are over and the good things can begin. It’s something the vast majority of us do from time to time, whether we actually realize we’re doing it or not. But why? Why do we sing?

I ponder that question today over at katdish’s site. Feel free to stop over there. And as always, you’re two cents would be much appreciated…

Stemming the tide

I don’t often delve into the political arena in my writing, but sometimes I stumble across a character whose story holds lessons we can all learn from, regardless of our political leanings. One such character is Jimmy Henderson, and if you’ll head over to katdish’s place, I’ll share what he taught me.

Without us guys

wonderwoman1I’m on semi-vacation this week so I can enjoy Thanksgiving and start on my next book, so I’m rerunning some long-ago posts. Here’s one of my favorites…

There are more than a few people in this world who believe my wife to be a super hero. She cooks and cleans and straightens and is the official boo-boo kisser of the house. She also serves as both shepherdess and policewoman for a ragtag bunch of fourth graders who both absolutely love and mostly obey her. So yeah, I get the whole super hero thing. I really do.

But like all super heroes, my wife isn’t impervious to everything. Like Superman and Kryptonite, she has a chink in her armor.

Luckily, she has me there to make sure that chink doesn’t get any bigger. Every super hero needs a sidekick to serve as comic relief and to get into trouble now and then. That’s me.

But also like any sidekick, I have a job to do. Robin saved Batman more than once, and how many times did all those whales and sharks come through for Aqua Man? And I tend to save my wife. A lot.

To find out what that chink is and what sort of saving I do, head on over to katdish’s blog. Chances are you have your own sidekick who does this sort of thing…

Come on over

Hey folks!

You remember Johnny Carson, right? Great guy. And funny. Millions of people couldn’t go to bed at night until after Carson. He was just that good.
But every once in a while Johnny would need a little break from the show. He had some things to take care of and new horizons to explore. So he’d call Jay Leno to come and do a show. Now everyone knew that Jay Leno was no Johnny Carson, but they put up with him, maybe even liked him, because they knew Johnny would be back the next day.

That’s sort of what I’m doing today. I’m Jay Leno, and katdish, over at Hey look, a chicken! is Johnny Carson.

My post is over there today, and I’d like you to come on over and see what I learned last week about God Work. Make sure you leave a comment so I’ll know you didn’t get lost along the way, and feel free to roam around katdish’s site. If you ever need a laugh, some social commentary, and a little random madness, she’s the lady to see.

And I’ll see you back here tomorrow.
